Alimony (also known as Spousal Support)is the term that is used for payments that are made by one spouse to the other as a result of a Divorce.
New Jersey recognizes five types of alimony: Pendente Lite (pending litigation), Limited Duration, Permanent, Rehabilitative and reimbursement. Each form has a different purpose based upon different circumstances all of which can have a significant effect upon the Payor and the Payee.
Alimony, based upon circumstances, may be changed and/or modified and/or terminated.
Alimony also possesses tax ramifications for both the Payor and Payee.
Alimony is separate from Child support.
